From Camera to Contribution

I’ve been contributing to Google Maps for a few years now, and while it may seem as simple as snapping a photo and uploading it, there’s a lot more to it, especially if, like me, you're passionate about photography and doing things properly.

I’ll be honest: I don’t love uploading raw photographs straight from a mobile. My preferred process involves capturing images on a DSLR, taking them home, reviewing and editing them, and only then uploading. For me, it's about more than just ticking a location box. It's about contributing thoughtfully.

🎯 Why Take the Extra Steps?

Uploading to Google Maps carries a certain responsibility. Out of respect for others, I always try to avoid faces and car registrations in my shots. Even though photos taken in public spaces are allowed, let’s be real, no one wants their face turning up uninvited on Google Maps. I usually avoid including people altogether, or if unavoidable, I blur faces and plates in post-processing.

📷 The DSLR Challenge: No Geotagging (Yet)

One of the bigger challenges I face is that my DSLR doesn’t geotag photos — and I don’t yet own an external GPS device for it. That means uploading photos to the right locations on Maps requires extra care. I double-check the exact spot on Google Maps before I upload, especially if the area has similar landmarks close together.

➡️ If you've used a GPS unit or know of a reliable one for geotagging DSLR photos, I’d genuinely love to hear your experience!

📝 Not Just Pretty Photos

While I prefer uploading DSLR shots for locations and scenery, I don’t shy away from more practical uploads either, like signs showing parking fees, shop notices, or opening hours. These are the kinds of small details that help travellers make decisions, and they’re often overlooked.

🧭 What I Ask Myself Before Uploading

Before sharing, I try to think like the person who’ll view the location on Maps:

  • Can you park nearby?
  • Is there somewhere to buy food or drinks?
  • Are there public toilets?
  • How much are the tickets or entry fees?
  • Are there accessibility considerations?

If I can answer one or more of these questions with a photo or short review, I’ll upload it.

Sharing photos and reviews on Google Maps isn’t just about racking up views (though those milestones are exciting), it’s about helping people feel prepared, welcomed, and confident in new places. And if I can do that with a photo that’s had a little love and effort behind it, I’m happy.

I would love to hear how you contribute to Google Maps — do you also use a DSLR? Do you geotag your images? Drop your tips in the comments below!
